it was OK. When we got in, the first thing I noticed was how the place smelled. I dont know how to explain it, but it smelled like they dont have a well ventilated or proper exhaust for the kitchen. This place is not a legit Chinese restaurant, by the way. What they serve is basically Westernized Chinese dishes, aka The Chinese delivery/take-out kind of Chinese, and if it were for me, i wouldnt have stayed, but i was with family and we were with family friends who recommended the place. I got the tofu in and it was ok. I tried some of my siblings' foods, but nothing really stood out. The server was nice though. She was so patient with us and got our orders right. (I added 1 star, bec of her)

Lunch buffet sucked really bad. Charge more, make it taste better. The food on the buffet is NOT the same as the food for they serve off the menu not even close. It is like being in two different restaurants. Trust me go elsewhere for a buffet.

Recently remodeled and re-opened with a new menu. My new favorites include the salt & pepper calamari, Mongolian beefs and still love the Singapore noodles from the old menu. The new dining room looks great.

My family has been eating at Chen for years! Before the remodel it was pretty average Chinese fare but when they got remodeled the menu also got a revamp and the food is greatly improved! Like any fried food, it is 100% better fresh in the restaurant and I highly recommend to go in and eat on your first visit. Chen was always my family's go to for Chinese but now it is just an eating out go to!

Well I hate to say it, the food was pretty much inedible. Their food was congealed on the plate. Between the rice and the Lo Mein, I could of built a three tier snowman. What was worst, I'm not sure what was floating inside the sweet and sour sauce, it looked discussing. Crystal L

Egg roll and Crab Rangoon was the highlight, that is what earned the 2 stars. Was not impressed with the egg foo young, except for the fact that they did use decent sized shrimp. The gravy tasted like it was made from a package. Girlfriend ordered the orange chicken, she barely ate any of it due to the presence of bitter orange peels and the chicken was dry. Overall I felt the food was bland and was disappointed. Had higher hopes based on some of the reviews. I really miss New Sunny, at least CL still has the Breakers for decent fried rice.

Well. .. started off great. . Seated quickly, then it kind of ended. Egg rolls are amazing probably the best I have ever eaten. . Ordered sesame chicken to be safe (always be safe the first visit to a new chinese restaurant) and it was literally tasteless but they give you enough for 3 people... even added hot oil but didn't work. . Refills are sparse had to actually get up and ask for refills. Server wasn't very friendly but she was chinese so who knows. . I would go back for egg rolls and try something else just too see. . But not too many chinese options around

This is better than most Chinese cuisine and our service was excellent. Good variety on the menu and the Crab rangoons are awesome! The main dishes had really good fresh vegetables. However they were pretty bland. They really need to flavor more. We had a Teriyaki Beef and a Shrimp & Scallops in Garlic Sauce. We added some add'l Chili sauce to give both dishes some spice but it didn't make up for the lack of flavor.

We were pleasantly surprised. The decor is lovely. Food is very fresh and flavors quite yummy. Ordered food without MSG. We especially liked the calamari salad and shrimp with garlic sauce.

Since we have recently moved to this area, we have been trying out a restaurant every night. Which brings me to Chen. After our disastrous meal at another Chinese restaurant, it left me wanting Chinese food so we tried Chen. I rated this restaurant three stars because the food was average. Nothing special but edible. Their claim to fame is their egg roll. I would have to agree on this point. The egg rolls are the bomb! But that is where the delicious food ends and mediocre takes over. The restaurant appeared to be clean with the exception of the entry/cashiers area. The floor was a disaster. I am still on the hunt for top chef delicious Chinese food!

Excellent food and take out. Home delivery was great, fast and reasonable. Very well managed and beautifully remodeled. A real nice place to eat.

This is good Asian food. They have lovely fried rice and orange chicken. The restaurant has classy black and red decor.

Not the greatest Chinese food - kind of bland, greasy small eggrolls... disappointing because I was told it was good. And when you are craving Chinese, you've got to feed that dragon! My dragon is still hungry...

The restaurant doesn't appear to be very clean based on the way it smell and the amount of flies roaming around the dinning area-I can only imagine other areas of the restaurant. It's hard to read the menu, because of the dirty little paper light fixtures over the dinning tables. I gave two stars because the food wasn't bad and our server was very nice.

Although chen's food is decent, we placed an order and were told it would take 45 minutes, only to call an hour later and be quoted another 45 minutes. Even if they are busy, they need to tell people it will take 2 hours if that's what it will actually take.

my family moved here 4 years ago near McHenry,I'll. since then trying to find a really good Chinese restaurant is impossible!! Then one Friday night we stopped at Chen's, YES we found out liking here very much!! The waiter was fabulous and the food was so good and tasty. I can't eat msg so it did not bother me at all. The egg rolls Soooo good and everything is so very fresh!! Highly recommend to try. 5 stars

"Blek." ******************************** The following is an explanation of the complexity of this "Blek" review: This reviewer stumbled upon this place while running lunch-time errands. They offered a buffet that wasn't cheap and but it was sleazy. This was a poor, sorry attempt at anything Asian and had been so over cooked and smothered in some sort of brown sauce it hardly resembled food. It smelled like canned brown gravy with no other discernible flavors. It was astonishing to look around and see at least five other tables of seemingly happy diners piling on the food and noshing away happily. A bit surreal. The reviewer did not eat this slop, but instead quickly left money to pay the bill and a full, untouched plate. ...Blek.

I could eat this food every day! My wife and I love this place and eat here often. The new remodel turned out great...very comfortable and unimposing with a nice outdoor patio. Love the Moo Shu Pork, Mongolian Beef, and my wife really likes the Moo Goo Gai Pan and the Mai-Tai's! I've heard about General Tso's Chicken and must try that soon. Great staff is always helpful, and the owner is a class A guy! Thanks Chen for a great place to go in Crystal Lake.

Inconsistent food quality. We only get take out from Chen but in the many times we ordered, the food has been all over the place - super greasy (egg rolls), not - so - fresh shrimp (shrimp fried rice ), not-so-fresh swweet and sour sauce (it actually smelled bad too). And then sometimes the food is spot on. We will not be trying it again.

For 20 years Chen's has served us consistently good food. My first experience with Chinese food was in NYC's Chinatown while growing up in New York. That's a tough act to follow and Chen's is not at that level. However it is definitely the best Chinese in the Crystal Lake area. The egg rolls are outstanding, you can't go wrong on these. I also recommend the crab rangoon. It's among the best I've had. The sweet n sour chicken is satisfying. I love low mien and this is a well prepared version of the classic noodle dish. I recommend the orange beef. It's got a little (very little) heat and is a great dish paired with white rice. The lunch specials are generous portions and are served up for a reasonable price. Chen's is great for carry out and plenty of room to fine with the family.

My family and I have been going here since I was born. BEST CHINESE FOOD EVER!!! And their sister restaurant Sun Shui are amazing. there EGG ROLLS and the BEST egg rolls in the world!! Also their sweet and sour sauce is to die for!!! Sesame chicken is amazing!! I am super picky about my chinese food. It can be the worst food ever or absolutely amazing and let me tell you Eric and Ming do it right. This place is the best.

This place sucks. Food has no flavor. I went a few times to give the benifit of the doubt. But it's bad every time.

This place has been around for a while now and I think by where I live it's in a good spot. I love there food here! And the staff is soooo nice! I think this definitely a place to go!

Food is always good. Had a bad experience with getting food delivered, was cold. Manager not very willing to compensate.

I thought since they spent the money to remodel the place, that perhaps they would improve the quality of their low end take out food. I was WRONG. We had a total of 6 diffferent dishes and 4 were inedible, the other 2 barely passable. It's impossible to screw up Sweet and Sour Chicken right?...wrong, the sauce had no flavor whatsoever. Eggroll contained what seemed like raw chunks of uncooked cabbage, potstickers...bland. The crab rangoon, however, were excellent. Perhaps there are items on the menu that are good, but after going 0-6 I will not be finding out. They are getting 1 star just because I can't give zero. I guess the one is for the crab rangoon.

Three glorious words, General...Tso's...Chicken. When I moved to the city I tried to find a comparable substitute only to fail miserably. Their General Tso's just can't be beat. Overall it's just an all around great Chinese place. Everything is very fresh and I've yet to have a bad dish. General Tso's Chicken= A+ Crab rangoon= A Eggrolls=A+ Triple Crown Sizzling=A

My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for many years. About two years ago, it was remodeled and is an absolutely beautiful restaurant. The food is terrific. My favorites are the Chicken Lettuce Wraps and General Tsao's Chicken. For appetizers, their spring rolls are great as well as the potstickers. I also really like the fact that almost all of the dishes can be made with tofu as well. The service is always outstanding and all the people who work at Chen are very friendly. If you like great Chinese food, Chen is the place to go in the Crystal Lake area.

Come here only if you are curious to see the remodeling that has taken place over the past year or 2 because it looks great. But that's where the greatness ends, and I'm sure the managers are hoping you won't see past this façade. In reality, it's just another run-of-the-mill sit down Chinese restaurant. The food is pretty generic too. Plus the server spilled my drink all over the table, which is an unfortunate experience I won't soon forget. :-/

Great Food. Gets away from the same old flavors and sauces just about every Chinese place in the country uses. Fresh ingredients and great portion sizes. Very reasonable pricing, and the lunch specials are great. Only place I order take out Chinese from.

The food is great! Atmosphere is nice too. I read the previous revews and decided to try it anyway. Our entire family loved it. Really, we couldn't find anything wrong with it. Worthy of 5 stars? Maybe, but I reserve that for when I'm blown away. We will defintely be going back.

Some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. Very close to P.F. Chang's in quality. When you order General Tso or Orange or Honey or Lemon chicken you get real white meat chunks of chicken not just fried batter and mixed chicken parts. Good food for the money....best Chinese around in my opinion for a small place. The only negative I found was the egg and spring rolls tend to be a bit greasy. Oil not hot enough maybe? Other than that...very good. Good service too. Clean and nice.

I have only dined-in here a few times (it is cold sometimes in the winter) and never gone to the lunch buffet, but I've ordered take-out/delivery more times than I can remember in the past decade. This is consistently my favorite place for Chinese food in the area, only Plum Garden in McHenry tops it when looking to dine out. IMO, the only weak point is that the breading on any sweat/sour dishes is average, but the other dishes are always great; the Kung Pao is probably the best.

My absolute favorite place for Chinese food. Best crab rangoon I've ever had. Never greasy, always still crisp and hot when they are ordered from take out. Wonton soup and chicken fried rice are the best I've ever had, as well. Sweet and sour chicken is also great. Very happy to see they remodeled and kept the same food menu. However, I will miss the lunch buffet.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
